Abraham Lincoln died at 7:22am, April 15, 1865, one-hundred fifty years ago today. This portrait of the 16th President of the United States by contemporary artist Wayne Brezinka is currently on loan at the historic Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., May 6, 2014 — May 6, 2015. Brezinka’s 4 ft x 5 ft portrait is part painting and part three-dimensional collage of cardboard, rope and several artifacts he collected from the 1860s.

Collage artist Wayne Brezinka spent two months gathering Civil War-era photos and newspapers to use in his mixed media Lincoln portrait. Image courtesy of Wayne Brezinka

The home page for the Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag video game campaign, created by Sid Lee for Ubisoft

Digital agency Sid Lee recently launched a web campaign for video game developer Ubisoft. It’s all part of a project called “Defy History” for Ubisoft’s “Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag” video game.

The campaign asks fans to log on to a site, where they see a painting crafted by artists from L’Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris, which features a battle scene from the “Age of Piracy,” the era during which the game is set.

Users can use webcams to “place their faces” on characters from the painting, and the most popular faces will be immortalized on the painting. The final piece of art will be displayed in Le Musée de la Marine this November.

Arts in Education, Fred Babb

I discovered Fred Babb‘s art yesterday through a friend’s post on Facebook. Although Fred passed away in 2006, his colorful, playful work continues to delight and inspire with its simple but powerful messages. To read and see how Fred’s work inspires one teacher’s art lessons for kids, click here.

Eco Art: Graphic Design for Change

Poster: Joe Scorsone + Alice Drueding

The above poster and 99 others are all part of The 4th Block’s Eco-Poster Competition, currently featured in an exhibition at the Riverside Art Museum in Riverside, California. The posters on display use design as a tool for addressing issues of transportation, air, and water pollution — challenges directly affecting the lives of residents every single day in Southern California. The exhibition has been extended through March 30. (MORE)

Emergent Behavior, Thomas Jackson

Glow sticks #1, Thomas Jackson

I ran across Thomas Jackson‘s work on Pinterest and thought it was pretty awesome. His ongoing “Emergent Behavior” series of photographs are inspired by “self-organizing, ’emergent’ systems in nature such as termite mounds, swarming locusts, schooling fish and flocking birds,” says Jackson. “By constructing the pieces from unexpected materials and placing them in environments where they seem least to belong, I aim to tweak the margins of our visual vocabulary, and to invite fresh interpretations of everyday things.” Jackson’s technique for capturing these images is also quite fascinating. (MORE)

I met illustrator Jesse Lenz the other day while freelancing at Men’s Health. Jesse’s numerous clients also include Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, Money, SPIN, and others. His recent work is pretty cool. Here’s a few of my favorites…

Newsweek: Murdoch Meltdown Mayhem. Cover illustration for an article about Rupert Murdoch. Sadly it was bumped from the cover last minute due to breaking news on a different story. Illustration by Jesse Lenz

Men's Health: How to ride an ATV (and look like you know what you're doing). Illustration by Jesse Lenz

The New York Times Book Review: Cover and feature for Monica Ali's new novel. It is about what if Princess Diana had faked her own death and eventually gone to live under an assumed name in America. Illustration by Jesse Lenz

Agraz Architects, architecture, Casa G House, Ricardo Agraz

The G House in Valle Real, Zapopan, Mexico was designed by architect Ricardo Agraz. Agraz studied the solar paths of the terrain and incorporated a series of slots in the ceiling. These allow a sharp flow of light lines that work as a solar watch where time passes by. It’s a beautiful house; a prime example of architecture as art. (MORE)
