Media Bias, Objectivity in Journalism

On my way to work this morning in Washington, D.C., I grabbed a copy of Express, the daily newspaper published by The Washington Post. The front cover had a photograph of President-elect Donald Trump and President Barack Obama from yesterday’s historic Oval Office meeting. The headline: “AWKWARD.”

On my lunch hour, I happened to walk by the Newseum’s outdoor display of today’s front pages from around the U.S.A. and the world. I couldn’t help but notice that some of the covers had the exact same photo, but with a different headline. Some papers chose to use another photo from the same meeting. The differences were sometimes VERY subtle. It was fascinating.

Objectivity in journalism? Media bias? Optimistic or negative? You be the judge. The newspaper covers below, and more, can be viewed on the Newseum’s web site.

abc-returns-to-rands-vision

ABC Television Network is rolling out a new on-air identity. Branding agency Loyalkaspar has refreshed the logo, which was originally created in the early 1960s by the late Paul Rand. Over the years, the logo became more spherical, and glares and reflections were added to the surface. The new design is flatter, the gradients are toned down, and subtly changes color based on time of day and type of program. The logo, says Loyalkaspar, is rebuilt to Rand’s original blueprint and proportions, and it has been stripped of everything superfluous in the hopes of creating something “articulate, luxurious, cinematic.” The identity program has been two years in the making and includes the use of a dedicated typeface called “ABC Modern.” (MORE)

Eco Art: Graphic Design for Change

Poster: Joe Scorsone + Alice Drueding

The above poster and 99 others are all part of The 4th Block’s Eco-Poster Competition, currently featured in an exhibition at the Riverside Art Museum in Riverside, California. The posters on display use design as a tool for addressing issues of transportation, air, and water pollution — challenges directly affecting the lives of residents every single day in Southern California. The exhibition has been extended through March 30. (MORE)

One of my favorite buildings in New York City, Hearst Tower opened in 2006 and was designed by architect Lord Norman Foster, renowned for his ability to design modern additions to historic structures. In the case of Hearst Tower, he has created an exciting interplay between the historic base and the new tower while maintaining the integrity of both buildings.

In its latest production, Treasures of New York goes on a private tour inside Hearst’s world headquarters. Timed with Hearst Corporation’s 125th anniversary, the film also highlights Hearst’s history and growth into one of the America’s largest diversified media and information companies. Treasures of New York: Hearst Tower premieres Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. (ET) on WLIW21 and Thursday, March 8, 2012 at 8 p.m. on THIRTEEN. (MORE)

Hearst Tower, the Manhattan headquarters of Hearst Corporation is the first commercial office building in New York City to be recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for achieving both LEED Gold for new construction and LEED Platinum for the operations and maintenance of its existing building at 300 West 57th Street.

The Interior Plaza is home to two magnificent pieces of art designed to complement the soaring, glass-lined space: Icefall, a three-story sculpted water feature, and Riverlines, a monumental fresco by acclaimed environmental artist Richard Long of the UK.
