Olympic Design: The 2012 Medals

2012 Olympic Games, David Watkins, Medals, Olympics

I can’t be in London, but I’m excited and looking forward to watching the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, which begin on Friday, July 27 and end on Sunday, August 12. Swimming, diving and gymnastics will be at the top of my list when I tune in, along with the opening and closing ceremonies. Artist David Watkins designed the 2012 Olympic medals, which stand ready in the Tower of London vaults. Watkins’ Olympic gold medal is the heaviest to date, weighing in at 400g, of which 6g is gold, and the rest is solid silver. The Olympic medals have a rich and interesting design history. (MORE)

Today is America’s 236th birthday. Happy Independence Day to my family, friends and clients! THANK YOU to all who serve our country, and to all our fallen heroes. The painting below is one of my favorite works of art by American-born painter Jasper Johns. (MORE)

The History Channel‘s wildly popular Hatfields & McCoys miniseries (recently aired over Memorial Day weekend) is a fictional retelling of the infamous feud, but writer Dean King‘s upcoming book The Feud will attempt to piece together the full picture. Here’s a preview of the book’s cool cover design. In my book, it’s spot on. (MORE)

Today is Earth Day 2012. Organizers are calling on over one billion people around the globe to participate and help “Mobilize the Earth”. The spectacular “blue marble” image of the earth (pictured below) is the most detailed true-color image of the entire Earth to date. Provided by Visible Earth/NASA, this is one of many stunning images freely available to educators, scientists, museums and the public. (MORE)

One of my favorite buildings in New York City, Hearst Tower opened in 2006 and was designed by architect Lord Norman Foster, renowned for his ability to design modern additions to historic structures. In the case of Hearst Tower, he has created an exciting interplay between the historic base and the new tower while maintaining the integrity of both buildings.

In its latest production, Treasures of New York goes on a private tour inside Hearst’s world headquarters. Timed with Hearst Corporation’s 125th anniversary, the film also highlights Hearst’s history and growth into one of the America’s largest diversified media and information companies. Treasures of New York: Hearst Tower premieres Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. (ET) on WLIW21 and Thursday, March 8, 2012 at 8 p.m. on THIRTEEN. (MORE)

Hearst Tower, the Manhattan headquarters of Hearst Corporation is the first commercial office building in New York City to be recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for achieving both LEED Gold for new construction and LEED Platinum for the operations and maintenance of its existing building at 300 West 57th Street.

The Interior Plaza is home to two magnificent pieces of art designed to complement the soaring, glass-lined space: Icefall, a three-story sculpted water feature, and Riverlines, a monumental fresco by acclaimed environmental artist Richard Long of the UK.

I’ve noticed this poster around midtown Manhattan the past few weeks. I think it’s a great example of typography, color and graphic design for advertising. It’s eye-catching, beautiful and conveys a great message and association with the Bloomingdale’s brand during the holiday season. (MORE)
