There is no such thing as finding one’s purpose. It’s about creating the conditions where your purpose can find you. It’s not about asking what is the meaning of life, but rather asking what your life means.

Yet again, social media inspires today’s post. My friend Don Seckler posted a photo of this Dark Devil’s Food Cake on Facebook today, and April Kabbash “liked” and commented on Don’s post with details about Sweetapolita… the source of this truly AMAZING CAKE! It’s a work of art. (MORE)

I’m going on a Hidden Harbor Tour tonight and I’m excited! I’ll board the Zephyr at Pier 16 in lower Manhattan at 6:15pm and explore the Brooklyn waterfront down to Sunset Park, over to Kill Van Kull and Howland Hook, back to Military Ocean and Global Marine Terminals and finally, past the Statue of Liberty on a two hour tour. FUN! This particular tour is sponsored by OpenHouseNewYork (OHNY) and the Working Harbor Committee. Exploring New York Harbor by boat is an interesting experience as well as a pleasant and relaxing way to spend an afternoon or evening. NOTE: tours often sell out quickly so plan ahead. (MORE INFO)

I’m a long-time fan of Russian-born Peter Oumanski‘s delightful illustrations and video animations. His growing client list includes Maxim, Fast Company, Billboard, Los Angeles Times, New Jersey Monthly and MTV… just to name a few! Peter lives in Fair Lawn, New Jersey with his wife Marina.

I grew up in Michigan and I still remember and love the taste of fresh Michigan sweet corn. However, having lived in the Garden State for the past twenty years or so, I’ve come to appreciate and look forward to Jersey-fresh corn every summer. Simply boiled in a pot of hot water with husks removed, or soaked in water and then grilled with husks intact, there’s nothing better than fresh corn on the cob slathered in butter and seasoned with salt and pepper. Here’s a recipe I discovered by Steven Raichlen for Mexican Grilled Corn. It’s a new take on corn on the cob that’s very easy to make and super delicious! You don’t even need a charcoal grill… I make it on a grill pan on my electric stove. (VIDEO)

Gardens are a work of art. We’re at the midpoint of summer now, my favorite season. Last week, I visited The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx for the first time. I can’t wait to visit this artful garden again in the fall (my second favorite season). One of the current exhibitions is Spanish Paradise: Gardens of the Alhambra and runs through August 21. It’s beautiful.
